Architectural research is of little value in isolation: it should serve to broaden and deepen the knowledge base of the profession. Anne Boddington – chair of the art and design sub‐panel of the Research Excellence Framework, which assesses research quality in UK higher‐education institutions – considers how this can be achieved by breaking boundaries both within practice itself and between practice and academia, including through newly instated graduate apprenticeships.
