Dialogues in human geographySummary: This commentary examines how coordinated management and emergency response (CMER) have been mobilized within the United States and Ireland to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing upon a performative conception of scale, I argue that it is crucial to recognize the potency of the scalar politics of CMER organization to understand the differences in public health responses within and between political jurisdictions.
